Wellesley, Arthur, Duke of Wellington

Arthur Wellesley, first duke of Wellington (1769-1852), was the British commander who in 1815 defeated Napoleon in the Battle of Waterloo. On New Year's Day 1815, the British army at New Orleans received 1,600 replacement troops from Wellington's army. The decisive battle for the city was fought on January 8, with the British sustaining significantly heavier casualties than the Americans (Mahon 364).
